The new BAföG: simpler – better – bigger
The most important source of funding for study is grants provided in accordance with the law known in German as the Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz - BAföG for short.
Students can be paid financial support of up to €585 per month. Applications for BAföG financial support should be made immediately upon being accepted or enrolled onto a course, or after re-registration. If the required conditions are met, financial support will be paid for the month in which the course of study is started at the university or college onwards, starting at the earliest with the month in which the application is made. Usually, a decision to provide funding will be taken for one year at a time.
Who is eligible for funding?
German students will usually receive BAföG funding. In certain circumstances foreign students can receive this funding too.
First course of study, additional study, change of course
A student's first course of study will usually qualify for funding, as will a second course, additional education or an MA course which builds on a BA. A change of course before the start of the 4th semester will not affect eligibility for funding if good reason is given.
Speak to someone in person
Granting of BAföG support is the responsibility of the staff of individual universities and colleges.
